Lorna Bracewell was the 13-year-old drummer for Christian group Cross Eyed until band mate Cliff Rice realized she should be out front. Since then, she's played hundreds of gigs, solo and with the band, performing covers while writing her own material. Now, at 19, Bracewell has an album that shows her closing the gap between herself and influences such as Sheryl Crow and Melissa Etheridge.

Acoustic guitar rock is the basis for most of Bracewell's songs. But she shifts gears on a couple of full-band live tracks: the R&B punch of “Work Like You Don't Need the Money” and the punky “Beautiful Waste.” Her lyrics have a straightforward simplicity that takes some writers years of bad metaphors to achieve.
